Spiro Agnew was Richard Nixon's Vice-President from 1969 until he resigned in disgrace in October 1973.Best known for his bulldog demeanor, Agnew took special delight in taunting the media, referring to them in his most memorable phrase as, "nattering nabobs of negativism."
Agnew was popular with the Republican base until his history of corruption, including accepting cash bribes, was uncovered.
This puzzle is from 1970, when some saw him as Nixon's natural successor.
