RARE 1871 LEMUEL P COOPER FOR GOVERNOR NH PEOPLE'S REFORM TICKET LABOR REFORM
RARE DOCUMENT PRODUCED DURING THE RECONSTRUCTION PERIOD IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
Rare document that reads, "1871's People's Reform Ticket New Hampshire, Lemuel P. Cooper, Gubernatorial Campaign Ballot." In addition this ballot features George Roberts for Railroad Commissioner, Ellery A Hibbard for Representative to Congress, plus several other lesser, local positions. The major parties have always dominated the elections, not only for President, but for local State and Local candidates as well. But often a disagreement would crop up within the party, and fringe groups would break off. The Temperance movement almost always fielded a candidate. In this case the Reform Ticket refers to "Labor Reform." The research about Lemuel P. Cooper is scant, but we did find that he was 70 years old at the time, and had in the past supported the Republicans.  James A. Weston, his opponent, went on to win the election for Governor in 1871, and was a very popular Governor as well.
This certainly unique and novel "1871's People's Reform Ticket " measures approx. 6-3/4 by 4-1/4 inches (17 cm x 11 cm.) At the top of the Ballot very symbolically there is a drawing of a worker, a laborer, climbing a flag pole hammer in hand, where the American flag is flying. There was no slogan printed on the Ticket. I guess everyone knew what the party stood for.
One interesting feature to note, is that the original user of this ballot, used the front of the ballot to keep track of the proceedings while the voting was going on. There are numbers next to each candidate's name, and a total of 325. I am not certain if this was the final Grand Total.
ORIGINAL ANTIQUE AGE TONINING AND EDGE WEAR. THIS WAS AFFIXED TO A SCRAPBOOK AT ONE TIME AND HAS SOME GLUE RESIDUE ON THE BACK.
