ABOUT THE ITEM AND THE OHIO STATE DEMOCRATIC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE꞉
In September 1880 (8-years earlier) the Democratic State Executive Committee of Ohio was located in Rooms Nos. 5 and 9 of the Opera House Block, Columbus Ohio. The Chairman was J. F. McKinney (Columbus) and the Vice Chairman was W. T. Bishop (Cincinnati).
In September 1888 the organization's name had become the Ohio State Democratic Executive Committee and was located at 60 East Broad Street, Columbus. The Chairman was Jame B. Townsend (Columbus & Lima) and the Vice Chairman was W. S. Thomas (Springfield).
The nature of this piece of correspondence was to encourage the recipient to become a "special agent for this Committee in your loyalty" and "bend every effort to get at least one Republican to vote our ticket" (i.e. Democratic). The letter, as it was written, makes absolutely no mention of women; only "men" and "man." It would be 32-years into the future before the 19th amendment would grant women the right to vote on August 18, 1920 (although even then, many women of color remained disenfranchised due to many state laws, poll taxes and literacy tests).
In 1888, the 22th President of The United States was Grover Cleveland of the National Democratic Party. At the time, The Ohio State Democratic Executive Committee was rallying the public to vote the Democratic ticket - - locally and nationally. Did it work? The 23rd President of The United States would be Benjamin Harrison - of the Republic Party.
The building that stood at 60 E. Broad Street in 1888 was long ago leveled and a new building (a bank with four floors above it) was built on the parcel in 1918. The 1918 building remains today (adjacent to a Columbus Dispatch facility) and is owned by a “public policy” religious organization.
