JVC's Kaboom boombox debuted in 1998, and fast earned a reputation as a durable, powerful companion for road trips and beach parties. JVC discontinued the model a few years later, but revived it in 2005 to the delight of fans, who loved the trademark cylindrical housing and powerful, bass-heavy design. The RV-NB10B is the Kaboom's latest incarnation, and includes all the Kaboom standards--such as 52 watts of total system power and a dual subwoofer design--but adds a few extras like a wireless FM transmitter and a guitar/mic input, making it a versatile, rugged choice for everything from backyard barbecues to karaoke parties.
The RV-NB10B's defining attribute is its black tube-like body, which combines a high-tech, industrial look with a protective casing that holds up to bumps, jostles, and other on-the-move hazards. Inside the housing sits a pair of 3.19-inch front-firing full-range speakers and 6.31-inch subwoofers, a combination whose bass performance far surpasses that of most other boomboxes. The speakers are also bi-amped, meaning the system drives the main speakers and subwoofers separately to minimize distortion and create a cleaner overall sound. And if that weren't enough, JVC added an independent subwoofer volume control and an Active Clear Sound (ACS) circuit that improves clarity and balance in the low range. The variety of bass-enhancing features makes the Kaboom a true bass lover's dream.
But powerful bass is just the beginning. The built-in CD player delivers such essentials as 50-track programming, repeat play, and random play, while offering support for CD, CD-RR/RW, and MP3 (on CD-R/RW) formats. Listeners will also dig the FM transmitter, which lets them stream MP3s from a digital audio player through the system's powerful speakers. And users who want to be the life of the party can simply plug a microphone into the 1/4-inch input and create an instant karaoke session. The input even works with 1/4-inch guitar and digital piano chords, so musicians who want to play along with the music can plug right in and jam.
Should listeners tire of CDs, they can turn to the built-in auto-reverse cassette deck, which records from either the CD player or the radio. CD recording is particular convenient thanks to the CD synchro-start recording function, which coordinates the first few seconds of CD playback with the beginning of the tape. Meanwhile, the RV-NB10B's digital AM/FM tuner offers 30 FM and 15 AM presets, making it easy to find your favorite station in a flash.
Other features include a blue backlit display that keeps the fun going after the sun goes down; a clock/timer with sleep and wake-up functions; four preset equalizer settings (flat, beat, pop, and clear); a unique shoulder strap with a remote control holder that makes the Kaboom far easier to carry than most boomboxes; and a remote control that operates the unit from a distance.
