Description

Frances C. Griscom
This is the inscribed autograph of Frances C. Griscom.
Frances Canby Griscom
(1879-1973) was a pioneer of women's golf,
who played about fifty years before the founding of the LPGA.
She won the 1900 U.S. Women's Amateur Tournament, held at
Shinnecock Golf Club, Southampton, Long Island, New York.
Frances Griscom was born in Philadelphia to a prominent family.
Her father was Clement A. Griscom, a wealthy businessman and
shipping magnate. One of her brothers was Lloyd C. Griscom, a
diplomat who served as ambassador to Italy and Brazil
(please
note- I am also selling a document signed by Lloyd Griscom)
.
She was also an aunt of
distinguished ornithologist
Ludlow Griscom.
She owned a large plantation named Water Oak, located in
Tallahassee, Florida, where she enjoyed hunting and fishing.
The autograph is on a piece of paper, about 5" by 8". The paper
is a page from a 1902 Calendar Book that was originally owned
by the Orange Memorial Hospital, located in Orange, New Jersey.
The date on the page is May 20. The page is inscribed as follows:
It is better to have "won" and lost,
Than never to have "won" at all
Frances Canby Griscom
With apologies to
Alfred Tennyson
The page has a 1" tear at the top, and the left edge is ragged from
being torn out of the calendar book. Otherwise, it is in good condition.
The autograph comes with a certificate of authenticity
from JG Autographs. The autograph and the certificate
of authenticity are enclosed in a plastic page, which is
open at the top, allowing easy access to the autograph,
while keeping it protected.
Autographs by Frances Griscom are very scarce.
