Joseph F. Ropa Playing Cards
Description:
Here's something you'll never see offered again! This is a new, still sealed deck of playing cards from a 1954 Chicago election. The back of the cards say "Compliments of Joseph F. Ropa. Recorder of Deeds. Democrat."
Joseph Ropa was a Democrat in Chicago who first got the Cook County Recorder job in 1953. The next election was in 1954 (he won) and he died in 1956, so it's clear that these cards were made for the 1954 campaign. They are 3.5" x 2.25", and still wrapped in the original cellophane. Because they were hidden in a box in the attic for the past 59 years, they are in excellent condition! The tax stamp is cancelled and the lower left hand corner of the stamp is dirty from something. See the image above. The stamp is affixed to the cellophane wrapper, and the dirt, whatever it is, probably hasn't bled through the plastic to the joker card below.
You are unlikely to ever see these again, so don't pass them up!
